Mark Sanford has two main Trumplike qualities, he's a liar and he cheats on his wives. Like Trump, Sanford is a scumbag and the Trump crowd loves scumbags because most of them are scumbags and like Trump and his supporters, Mark Sanford is a hypocrite. Sanford has 37 ethics violations which should put him in good stead with the Republican voters. The only things going against Sanford is that he's relatively sane and has a clue as to how to govern. Other than that, Mark Sanford is a big scumbag, the kind of candidate Republican voters love.
For Sanford to really connect to the Republican base he needs to have committed more financial crimes and have raped some children. That's the gold standard for becoming a top Republican. I bet if you dig deeply enough you find that like Trump, Mark Sanford is a dangerous pedophile. Being an adulterous thug may not be enough for Sanford to win the hearts and minds of Republican voters but if Sanford ups his game and sexually assaults some women and children Republican voter may flock to Sanford in droves.
